HOW TO CREATE A STYLED LOOK IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS
WHITE HOT HOLLYWOOD GLAM
Melody here, and I am so excited lately I’ve been getting asked nonstop about how I put together looks for my styled model and talent shoots. Normally, I feel like I have most of the answers I need, but this one stopped me because I’ve never really thought about it before. Ha! Sounds silly, I know. But I’ve been working in the fashion and entertainment industries for almost ten years now, so most things just happen out of necessity or learning on the go.
Moving forward, I’d love to start teaching more and bring you loves along for the lessons. I’m super excited to share my experience in the model and talent, fashion and design, as well as the public relations and entertainment industries as best I can in order to help give you the tools you need to design a life you love and kill it in the world of fashion and entertainment. These are my personal experiences and are only meant to educate, speak my truth, and help those looking to break into the industry.
Let’s get started.
Today I am going to breakdown how I put together my styled looks for photoshoots in 5 easy steps. A lot goes into creating a photo shoot - hours of research and scouting, nonstop communication with your team and partners, execution and delivery, etc… But we will save all that for another time. Today we are starting simply by discussing what it takes to actually create a styled look.
STEP 1: INSPIRATION
The key to a good look is a well-thought out plan. Finding inspiration is the key and I look for mine everywhere but specifically in arts and entertainment. Those who know me personally know I am absolutely obsessed with the world of entertainment and all of its craziness and glory. I pretty much leave my tv on E! (or jazz music when I’m home. I’m specifically with E! News, the Kardashians and E! News Daily Pop. I know, surprise! I’m super basic. Ha. But in all seriousness, the light-hearted and truth-speaking nature this network and their hosts have, are a true inspiration.
Other than that, I look to my favorite celebrities for inspiration including Kristin Cavallari, Britney Spears (early 2000’s “Slave for You” BritBrit), and Gwen Stefani. My other personal favorite places to find inrpiration are from old hollywood films such as “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and even classic Disney Princess vibes because… Who doesn’t want to feel like a Disney Princess on set?! Anyway, once you find your inspiration, I highly recommend putting all of the images and information onto a Pinterest board OR create a “Style Guide” that you can bring to set and help keep you on track. You can see an example of the one I made for this shoot above, as well as some photography notes in case I want to grab those BTS scenes shots or take some of my own photos. ;)
STEP 2: MAKEUP
Believe it or not, I was originally inspired for this look by Kim Kardashian and her wedding day makeup. It was soft and subtle, yet so elegant. You can see the original Kim inspiration in the video breakdown below. The inspiration image below is one I’ve had pinned for a long time. When I saw Kim’s makeup, I knew the direction I wanted to go with accessories and simple elegance.
STEP 3: HAIRSTYLE
One of my newest and favorite style inspiration comes from model Rosie Huntington-Whitley. I feel her look is often reminiscent of the old Hollywood “glam” era I mentioned before. I love adding a pop of personal and modern to style to these looks. My personal style consists of comfortable styles which allow you to elevate or simplify them through accessories and glam details. We will revisit this step again later.
STEP 4: WARDROBE
Wardrobe from local AZ boutique -> Vida Moulin
This step is often referred to as a “look” and is what we use to reference an outfit including every detail from head-to-toe and overall aesthetic. I was originally inspired by Kim Kardashian’s wedding day look for this shoot, but wanted to tone down the formality of it since we were aiming to do a simple styled shoot in studio; not a giant wedding in Italy (although how great would that be?!) I was able to find inspiration that matched the “all-white” with rose gold tones and overall look I was originally going for. You can find my inspiration mood board, here.
STEP 5: ACCESSORIES + PROPS
The accessories of 2019 are the best I’ve seen in a long time. The pearl and large barrette and marble/ gold trends should never leave in my opinion! Luckily right now you can pick up some great pieces at most clothing stores and boutiques. We went to Nordstrom for our accessories, but highly recommend these from the amazing and local Lifestyled Co. Check out their accessories, here.
THE FINAL RESULTS
And with that, you have all the steps you need to put a styled look together. Use this when hunting down outfit inspiration and even when you style your first shoot!
